The PBEI has three fundamental uses.
Firstly, it helps respondents
evaluate both their level of ethical sensitivity and their ability
to judge the seriousness of ethical weight in business issues
by comparing their responses to our panel of 562+ private and
public managers. (The Inventory is self-scoring for measuring
one's ethical sensitivity and ethical judgment, and provides interpretations
of one's ethical profile.
The Trainers' Guide provides full instructions for administering,
scoring, and interpreting the Inventory.)
Secondly, it helps respondents judge the degree they are part of what might be called a moral community with peers, customers, and our reference sample.
Thirdly, it helps illustrate how
and why people disagree with each other morally and how to discuss
and resolve such differences. (Our Trainers' Guide outlines a
90-120 minute session
for doing this discussion.)
This third use of the instrument is an important training goal - to teach business people how to discuss ethical issues, especially ethical disagreements, in the workplace.
