PBEI is a training instrument that has proven useful in heightening awareness of the role of values and ethical perspectives in the workplace. It has successfully been used in training both public and private sector managers and employees, as well as part of Business ethics and public administration courses
It gives feedback in three areas:
This dimension shows how much one tends to view situations in ethical terms versus simply as every day practical matters. This score is then correlated to our reference panel of public and private sector managers in order to help the person compare his/her degree of ethical sensitivity to a norm.
This dimension correlates the
weight of ethical reservation one holds for various situations
with that of our reference panel to help the person compare his/her
discrimination of ethical seriousness to a norm.
These situations involve community/firm relations, company policy, customer relations, personal/family vs. business issues, and treatment toward fellow employees.
Combining one's score on the above
two scales results in an ethical profile
(e.g. ethically sensitive and appropriate in judgment.) We offer
interpretive questions to ask oneself based on this profile.
The Guide, in addition to describing
how to administer, score, and interpret the Inventory, also details
a 90-120 minute training session using the instrument. The design
focuses on helping people talk with each other about their ethical
values in the workplace and guides them in how to discuss their
ethical differences.
We have been able to categorize four major types of differences which arise in ethical discussions; and have developed alternative strategies and tactics to help in discussing and possibly resolving such differences.
We have found this session to be most valuable either as a stand alone session or as the introductory exercise in a longer ethics course/workshop.
